The 46,000-ton ocean liner was billed as “practically unsinkable” by the publicity magazines of the period. But it struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage just before midnight on April 14, 1912, and sank the following day. About 1,500 people died. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! FALMOUTH, Mass. – The discovery of two large pieces of the Titanic’s hull on the ocean floor indicates that the fabled luxury liner sank faster than previously thought, researchers said Monday. The hull pieces were a crucial part of the ship’s structure and make up a bottom section of the vessel that was missing when the wreck was first located in 1985, the researchers said. After the bottom section of the hull broke free, the bow and stern split, said Roger Long, a naval architect who analyzed the find. The stern, which was still buoyant and filled with survivors, likely plunged toward the ocean floor about five minutes later. “It would have been immediately terrifying,” he said. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREBlues bury Kings early with four first-period goals Previous researchers believed the ship broke in just two major pieces, the bow and stern, which was how the sinking was depicted in the 1997 film version of the catastrophe. David Brown, a Titanic historian, estimated before the latest find that the stern took 20 minutes to slide into the water. “It turns out the Titanic was more merciful. It was over more quickly,” Brown said. The newly found hull sections, located about a third of a mile from the stern of the wreck, were examined during an expedition in August sponsored by The History Channel. On Monday, Titanic experts met at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to discuss their analysis of the find for a documentary to be aired on the cable channel on Feb. 26. The sections, both about 40 feet by 90 feet, were once a single section and were found in good condition, with red bottom paint still visible. The missing sections had been believed to have fragmented into hundreds of small pieces. “The breakup and sinking of the Titanic has never been accurately depicted,” said Parks Stephenson, a Titanic historian who took part in Monday’s conference.
Warning systems on two 747 planes over Scotland have averted what would have been aviation’s worst collision disaster. It could have killed almost 800 passengers and crew after pilots accepted the other plane’s air traffic control instructions to turn away.A report from the UK Airprox Board reveals that in June the 747s came within 100m vertically and 4km laterally on a converging course and were just 30 seconds from each other. The planes, a 344-seat 747-400 and a new 386-seat 747-8, were about to enter air lanes to cross the Atlantic Ocean when air traffic controllers realised they were headed for each other at the same altitude — 34,000ft.The report said an air traffic controller issued timely warnings to the pilots but it was apparent both crews took the other’s instructions and the board found it hard to determine why.“The board was surprised that all four pilots misheard or misinterpreted the avoiding action instructions despite at least one of the crews reading them back correctly,” it said. The traffic collision avoidance systems on both 747s activated and issued opposite climb and descend instructions to the crews, which were followed. One pilot assessed the severity of collision risk as “high”.Last year, the board investigated 161 near misses in British airspace, of which 28 per cent were assessed as risk bearing. There were 14 assessed as a collision risk and a further 36 deemed as “safety not assured”.The worst midair collision occurred on November 12, 1996 in India when a Saudi 747 with 312 aboard and an Air Kazakhstan Ilyushin 76 with 37 passengers and crew collided. The IL-76 dropped below its assigned altitude before landing and hit the 747. Neither had the TCA system which became mandatory worldwide after the incident. But that did not stop midair disasters. In 2002, a Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev 154 hit a DHL 757 over Germany, killing 69.Both received Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) instructions once the risk was detected but the Bashkirian pilot ignored the climb alert and followed last-minute air traffic control directions to descend. It then became mandatory to follow TCAS alerts. To see how a TCAS works see here.

Orton later invoked his rematch clause for Money in the Bank on June 18, where Mahal defeated Orton once again. When Orton asked for a rematch once again, SmackDown organiser Shane McMahon granted Orton his wish on the condition that Mahal would choose the stipulation. Mahal chose the Punjabi Prison match and The Great Khali made a comeback to help Mahal retain his title.Mahal has had quite a journey on the show and remains unbeaten against John Cena even though he hasn’t beaten him either.IndiaToday.in caught up with the WWE Champion and Mahal spoke about his SummerSlam strategy, his wish to defend his WWE title on Indian soil and much more. The #ModernDayMaharaja @JinderMahal defends his title against @ShinsukeN THIS SUNDAY when #SummerSlam streams LIVE on @WWENetwork! pic.twitter.com/jZms7MaE91- WWE (@WWE) August 17, 2017Here are the excerpts:Q: How does it feel to still hold the WWE Championship after some intense matches?A: It’s a huge honour. I grew up idiolising the WWE superstars, wanting to be the WWE Champion. It’s a huge honour to be representing India, WWE and of course, my fans.advertisementHappy Independence Day India. Can’t think of a better way to celebrate than beating John Cena? https://t.co/ayUbHnnSAZ- The Maharaja (@JinderMahal) August 15, 2017Q: You beat Randy Orton yet again in the Punjabi Prison match and the involvement of The Great Khali was surprising. How did you manage to pull the rabbit out of the hat?A: See it’s like you choose the Punjabi Prison match and since it was my turn, I chose it because there is no disqualification, no count out. (chuckles) So I used the rules to my advantage. I called The Great Khali to watch my back and he came to help me and I won. Great Khali is like my older brother, we have a very close relationship and we talk all the time. He’s someone I get advice from and he was the World Heavyweight Champion and I admire him. He’s someone I aspire to be like and I want to follow in his footsteps.Q: You fought the 16-time world champion John Cena in this week’s SmackDown. How differently did you prepare for that match compared to a match against Orton?A: Yes I had the pleasure of taking John Cena last night (Tuesday) and it was definitely one of the biggest match of my career. I actually didn’t have much time to prepare because they announced the match just a day before so I did everything to think about. Even Corbin tried to cash on in and everything unexpected was happening but luckily I walked out still the WWE Champion and remained undefeated against John Cena. And yes I look forward to taking on John Cena again and ultimately beating him.Part II pic.twitter.com/Zg3TqOkWAP- The Maharaja (@JinderMahal) June 16, 2017Get a glimpse of the #ModernDayMaharaja training for my match at #WWEMITB , for when I retain my WWE Championship against @RandyOrton @WWE pic.twitter.com/MXeVg3SUPC- The Maharaja (@JinderMahal) June 15, 2017Q: What went through you when Baron Corbin cashed in on his Money on the Bank contract and you had to fight instantly to retain your Championship?A: I was really worried. For a while I didn’t know what was going on but when they announced that Corbin is cashing in on his Money in the Bank, I did panic a bit because I didn’t have the Singh Brothers on my side and I was worried that this was a very opportune time for Corbin while I was down. But fortunately for me I was able to hold on and since Corbin no longer holds that contract, it’s a huge relief for me.THIS. JUST. Secondly, I want to bring the WWE Championship to India. I know that WWE is working really hard to announce a date shortly and once it’s finalised, I hope I can bring the WWE Championship to India and defend it on Indian soil.advertisementQ: So WWE is planning a match or an event in India?A: India is a very special part of the WWE Universe and so we really want to have an event there. WWE superstars were telling me about their experiences and how they can’t wait to go back there. It’s like we have wrestlers from all over the world. Like we have Shinsuke Nakamura from Japan, we have one from Bulgaria and Kevin Owens from Canada. WWE is truly a global entity, we travel all over the world, travel all these countries. It’s very diverse and I hope in the future WWE India also grows and I would love to see more Indians get signed and ultimately make their way up to RAW and SmackDown.Q: You also sang the Indian national anthem on Independence Day in America. How was that feeling?A: It was a very proud feeling, the lady singer did a wonderful job. And you know, we had my kind of celebration with bhangra dancers and for me, it was great.Q: SummerSlam is just round the corner. How are you preparing for your WWE Championship fight with Shinsuke Nakamura? What is going to be your strategy against him?A: My strategy is just to weather the storm. I know he’s very strong and he’s going to come with his strikes. He has very lethal precision with his strikes but there’s a reason I am the WWE Champion, my toughness and I can weather his storm. I will take his weakness when I find it and I also have the Singh brothers with me, they are my spirit that I walk out of the SummerSlam as the WWE Champion.Q: There are reports of WWE wanting to expand their fanbase in Japan as well which gives Nakamura an equal shot at the title. Your thoughts?A: Like I said earlier WWE is a global phenomenon and they want to expand all over the world. It’s not so much about the country but the performer. I started my career with WWE in 2011 and they didn’t just give me the WWE Championship or even the chance to contest for it. It is just now that I have worked hard to reach this level. I have proven to WWE and the WWE universe that I am worthy of the Championship, that’s when it happened. So it’s going to be me if I am good or if Nakamura is worthy, he’ll win. It’s not about the country we are from.advertisementQ: What is the inspiration behind your finishing move ‘Khallas’?A: The inspiration is actually my uncle Gama Singh, who is a former professional wrestler and used to play during the 1980s. His signature was the camel clutch with submission so I originally used the camel clutch hold but then I added my variation when I picked a guy up and slammed him down. So it’s a thing from my uncle but with my twist to it.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Dinesh Karthik’s leadership skills and own form will be keenly observed when his team takes on Rajasthan Royals in a must-win Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter for both outfits, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.Karthik has a tally of 117 runs after 10 matches with only one 50. The World Cup call up has also failed to inspire the stumper-batsman who chose to go on a break to Mumbai after KKR’s fifth successive defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on the road. There have been talks about Karthik being removed as skipper even after head coach Jacques Kallis has put his weight behind the 33-year-old. The decision to send their best power hitter Andre Russell as low as No. 7 in the last few matches have only escalated the matter.Besides Karthik, vice-captain Robin Uthappa has been struggling with his own issues. While he has managed to score more runs than Karthik, 220 to be exact in nine matches but his strike rate of 119.56 has been a real cause of concern for the two-time champions.Uthappa wasted a lot of deliveries, which proved to be costly in their last home game against KKR. KKR fell 10 short of the 214-run target. He was dropped in their last game and so was Kuldeep Yadav who has failed to shine this season going for a lot of runs and failing to deceive the batsmen. In their remaining four games, KKR have to win all of them to qualify for the play-offs.advertisementComing to the visitors, Royals, placed seventh in the points and in need to win their remaining four matches in order to have any chance of qualifying for the playoffs, will be boosted by Ajinkya Rahane’s form. The India test specialist, removed from captaincy as Steve Smith took over, scored a magnificent hundred in their last game against Delhi Capitals.Royals lost the game but Rahane’s show was encouraging to say the least. Story Highlights Minister Kellier said these persons are “promising jobs where none exists” Scammers have no approved registration with the Ministry and, as such, are operating illegally Labour and Social Security Minister, Hon. Derrick Kellier, is again warning the public to be aware of unscrupulous persons who are collecting money with the promise of job placement overseas.Minister Kellier said these persons are “promising jobs where none exists and where they have no connection to put anybody in any job anywhere.”He said the scammers have no approved registration with the Ministry and, as such, are operating illegally.“No one must hand over their passport to anybody outside of an approved agent or unless they are dealing directly with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, to seek any form of employment overseas. Check with us before to see if (a) company is licensed to operate, to make sure that you do not give away your money and allow people to fleece you of your hard earned cash,” the Minister warned. He urged the public to report these unscrupulous persons so that appropriate action can be taken.Minister Kellier was speaking on August 8 during a meeting with representatives of Caribbean Airlines to formalise agreements between the airline and the Ministry for the transportation of Jamaican farm workers to the United States of America and Canada. In addressing the airline, Minister Kellier pointed out that service is critical to the survival of any business and that employers in North America want to know that when they make a request for workers, the Ministry can deliver. “We have to make sure that we get our workers there on time and in good shape,” he said.He thanked Caribbean Airlines for its service, noting that without its service, “we would not be able to find enough air transport to take our people abroad and to get the numbers that we currently have in North America.”The Minister informed that, currently, there are about 11,000 persons employed in the overseas work programme in the US and Canada. He also noted that the Ministry is working with the Canadian Government, through its High Commission, to iron out challenges relating to the issuance of visas for overseas workers. Mr. Kellier explained that, at times, workers either receive visas late or applications are declined. This, he said, has an impact on the airline as well as the employers who are expecting the workers. “We have no control locally over that problem. It is something between the Canadian Government and their local embassy here,” he said.He noted, however, that the Ministry will work with the Canadians “to work out some of the kinks in the system” in an effort to minimise the impact. Public urged to report these unscrupulous persons
With the launch of Chandrayaan-2 in the early hours of July 15, India is looking forward to being part of the elite group of three countries that have accomplished a soft landing on the moon. Chandtayaan-2’s lander Vikram will touch down on the lunar surface near the South Pole on September 6-7, 2019, bringing India at par with the US, Russia, and China. A soft landing is a considerate move that ensures the object is able to carry out further experimentation on the target planet or satellite, mostly with the help of a rover. The object is not destroyed upon the impact of landing, unlike in a hard landing. It is worth mentioning that this will not be the first time that any object launched by India will leave its imprint on the surface of the Earth’s only natural satellite. The country achieved hard landing on the lunar surface 11 years ago with Chandrayaan-1. As remarkable as this mission is going to be, in keeping with the tradition, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan on Saturday prayed at Tirumala temple for the success of the second moon mission. Sivan sought Lord Balaji’s blessings like his predecessors who used to worship at the hill shrine before every major space mission. Accompanied by some ISRO scientists, Sivan visited the temple along with a replica of Chandrayaan-2 to receive the “benign blessings of Almighty”. Additionally, he offered prayers at Sri Chengalamma temple in Sullurupet, near rocket port Sriharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The preparations for this have been going on smoothly and the aim of this mission is to bring forth information and revelations in the field of lunar science, besides demonstrating new technology for soft-landing. The challenges in the path of accomplishing this feat are several: nearly 3.844 lakh km distance between the earth and the moon have to be covered ensuring trajectory accuracy. Then comes the deep space communication link between the ISRO and the Chandrayaan-2; due to the distance, limited onboard power, radio signals will be weak with heavy background noise. The signals have to be picked up by large antennas. Chandrayaan-2 has to change the route from the earth orbit to moon orbit by firing onboard motors so that it is raised to reach the vicinity of the moon’s orbit. Since the moon’s location changes continually owing to orbital motion, the intersection of Chandrayaan-2 and the moon’s path will have to be predicted in advance and accurately. While this accomplishment is certainly one to be proud of, let us reflect on a critical thought that scientific feats can only be truly remarkable when a scientific temper is encouraged at large among citizens. The means to facilitate this democratic value is quality education and access to opportunities to maximum people. A sturdy social fabric is imperative for any grand accomplishment to be more meaningful. Efforts and resources that are invested to realise these aims ought to have an impact trickling down to the most common citizen. Quite literally, many are in the gutter but they are looking at the stars.
San Francisco: US based search engine giant Google has finally started rolling out the dark mode update for its Play Store, after the release of Android 10.
