Kane is England’s best striker and Rooney MUST play in midfield – Carragher

first_imgFormer England defender Jamie Carragher has told talkSPORT Wayne Rooney’s only chance of a starting spot at Euro 2016 is in midfield, with Tottenham star Harry Kane the Three Lions’ best option up front.Rooney, the current England captain and the nation’s all-time top scorer, will almost certainly be selected for Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for the summer’s finals in France, but there is some doubt over his role in the team.Premier League golden boot winner Kane, title-winning Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge are all thought to be ahead of Rooney in the running for a place in Hodgson’s attack, and the skipper even admitted recently that he is open to playing in a deeper role.“If Wayne Rooney is going to play at Euro 2016, he’s got more chance of playing in midfield than at centre-forward,” Carragher said in an exclusive interview with Drivetime.“Harry Kane is England’s best striker and he has to play on the back of the season he’s had for Tottenham. He’s a fantastic player and he has to be one of the first names on the team sheet.“Now, it’s just a case of whether Wayne plays just behind him as a second striker, or Roy plays him further back in midfield.”Rooney has featured in the deeper role for Manchester United this season, impressing with his range of passing and work rate after struggling as a striker under Louis van Gaal. There is a strong argument to suggest the veteran is the best option in midfield, and Carragher believes it will actually be one of Kane’s teammates from club level who Rooney will be competing with for a starting role.He added: “Wayne can play there, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that, and it think he may actually be competing for a place with Dele Alli, who has had a great season and made a great impact for Spurs and England this season.“There’s more chance of Rooney playing in midfield if he’s going to start at the Euros, which I expect him to do because of his experience and what he did during the qualifiers.”Listen to talkSPORT’s EXCLUSIVE interview with Jamie Carragher in full above!last_img
