Top NGSA students of Canje honoured

first_imgSeveral students from primary schools in Canje, Berbice, were honoured by a New York organisation for their exemplary performances at the recently concluded National Grade Six Assessment.Some of the recipients pose with their teachers The children each received monetary donations aimed at assisting them with their school materials as the new school year approaches.Those who benefited from the donation were from Zorg, Gangaram, Adelphi, Rose Hall, Cumberland, Fort Ordinance and Number Two primary schools.US$150 was given to the top student of each school, while the second place student in each school received US$125. The third and fourth place students were awarded US$100 each.The East Canje/New York Organisation consists of persons who are former residents of Canje but are now residing in the United States. The organisation has been making the donations for the past 11 years.Local representative, Anil Beharry thanked the education system which he said was responsible for the children’s success.“We want to wish these children well and hope as they get older, they will get better because our future lies in the hands of these young people,” he said.Saturday’s project was not the only charitable project for the community undertaken by the East Canje/New York Organisation but rather, funds are being raised to assist in the development of the Rose Hall Estate Cricket Ground.Beharry noted that a domino competition is expected to be held in New York and the proceeds will go towards developing the Rose Hall Community Centre Ground; one that was used as a first-class ground for cricket.last_img
