KINGSTON, Jamaica – In early 1970, the Jamaican duo of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths entered the British national chart with “Young, Gifted And Black”.It was one of the biggest hit songs in the United Kingdom that year.On April 4, Trojan Records celebrated the 50th anniversary of the single’s achievement by launching its younggiftedandblack2020 website. It highlights the accomplishments of young black people, posted by fans.Young, Gifted And Black was a reggae cover of American jazz singer Nina Simone’s 1958 standard, “To Be Young, Gifted And Black”. It peaked at number five on the British national chart.Laurence Cane-Honeysett of Trojan Records said an increasingly diverse Britain got into Young, Gifted And Black which was produced by Jamaican Harry “Harry J” Johnson.“Young, Gifted And Black was embraced by many as a unifying anthem – and of course music is one of the most emotive and motivational forces known to mankind,” he reasoned.Cane-Honeysett added that, “The positive theme is of course timeless. As of course, such is the quality of the duo’s wonderfully uplifting performance, and beautiful, sympathetic production, which still sounds fresh and vibrant after all this time.”Andy and Griffiths, who met in the early 1960s in Kingston, were romantically involved at the time of Young, Gifted And Black’s success. They were also two of the top solo acts at producer Clement Dodd’s Studio One label in the late 1960s.A prolific songwriter, Andy died in Kingston on March 27 at age 75. Griffiths, who became a member of the I Three, Bob Marley’s harmony group, performs regularly in Europe and North America.
Martin Lycka – Regulatory high temperatures cancel industry’s ‘silly season’ August 11, 2020 StumbleUpon Share Share Advertising Association moves against GRH APPG radical reforms June 16, 2020 Related Articles Submit BGC: GRG APPG approach will only serve the black market June 16, 2020 Britain’s bookmakers are demanding an urgent inquiry into a new report by the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) All- Party Parliamentary Group which is expected to call for a £2 per spin maximum stake to be imposed on all FOBTs when it is published this morning. The Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) has criticised the report as ‘deeply flawed’ and said it had been funded by commercial rivals of Britain’s bookmakers and warned such a move would be a ‘hammer blow’ to High Street bookmakers and threaten thousands of jobs. The ABB has now demanded an immediate inquiry by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards into the FOBTs All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) which it has condemned as a “front for vested commercial interests” stating there is no evidence that a reduction in stake size would decrease the risk of problem gambling.Speaking ahead of the publication of the APPG report, ABB CEO Malcom George said: “This is a deeply flawed report funded by vested interests who would directly benefit if its recommendations are ever implemented. The report is the view of a tiny group of anti-betting shop MPs. This group has been financed by those with interests in the casino, arcade and pub industries.“We strongly believe that the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards should urgently investigate this All-Party Parliamentary Group. This group of MPs has operated in secrecy, provided no transcripts of the evidence given to their meetings and operated throughout behind closed doors away from public scrutiny.“Britain’s bookmakers employ more than 43,000 staff and contribute over £1 billion a year in taxes. But, betting shops are already closing at the rate of more than 100 a year and if the findings of this rigged report are implemented, it could spell the beginning of the end for the High Street bookmaker.”The Group is funded by coin-op trade association BACTA, casino & coin-op machine manufacturer Novomatic, pubs operator JD Wetherspoon, arcade operator Praesepe, The Hippodrome Casino, LM Consulting and the Campaign for Fairer Gambling. The ABB argues that all these bodies are in competing gaming sectors or have links to the coin-op and casino sectors and as such ask questions about the objectivity of the report.Questioning the integrity of MPs is a bold lobbying move from the ABB, but the association has already described the APPG as a ‘kangaroo court’ and is clearly incensed at the anti-FOBT agenda that it perceives the group has followed from the outset. Whether the other politicians will agree with this charge remains to be seen.
StumbleUpon UK Supreme Court rules against Phil Ivey’s £7.7 million ‘Edge Sorting’ Crockfords Mayfair dispute October 25, 2017 London communications agency Hadden Consulting has confirmed that poker legend Phil Ivey has been granted permission by the Supreme Court to appeal his overturned £7.8 million Punto Banco ‘edge-sorting’ dispute against Genting Casinos.Last November, Ivey who is considered the best poker player in the world lost his legal battle against Crockfords Club Mayfair (Genting Casinos), as the UK Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the casino operator. The Court of Appeal held that Ivey had knowingly used ‘edge-sorting’ skills to gain an unfair advantage on Crockfords. Under its house rules, the casino was therefore right not to pay Ivey his multi-million winnings, since Ivey was deemed to have played a ‘dishonest game’.Following the decision, Ivey’s representatives immediately detailed that the poker pro would take his case to the Supreme Court, the UK’s highest court of appeal for civil cases. Issuing a statement through Hadden Consulting, Ivey commented on the matter‘Last November’s Court of Appeal ruling made no sense to me. The original trial judge ruled that I was not dishonest and none of the three Appeal Court judges disagreed, and yet the decision went against me by a majority of 2 to 1. I am so pleased that the Supreme Court has granted me permission to fight for what I genuinely believe is the right thing to do in my circumstances, and for the entire gaming industry. I look forward to the Supreme Court reversing the decision against me.’Phil Ivey is represented by Richard Spearman QC and Max Mallin QC of Thirty Nine Essex Chambers and Wilberforce Chambers respectively and Matthew Dowd of Archerfield Partners LLP.Matthew Dowd stated: ‘Phil and his legal team are delighted that the Supreme Court judges have decided that the Court of Appeal’s decision should be reviewed. The Court of Appeal’s ruling left the interpretation of Section 42 of the Gambling Act totally unclear and the decision to grant permission to appeal demonstrates that the Supreme Court agrees with that view.’ Share Phil Ivey relaunches Crockfords ‘edge sorting’ trial with UK Supreme Court July 14, 2017 Johnson odds-on to become shortest-serving Prime Minister September 25, 2019 Related Articles Submit Share

Jamie Stier, chief regulatory officer at the BHA, commented: “It is a strict requirement under the rules of racing in Britain that licensed jockeys do not place bets on any races.“It is simply not appropriate to the public’s perception of the sport’s integrity that those who are licensed to ride in races should be able to bet on the sport, even on races in which they are not participating. This is consistent with other major sports.”Stier added: “The case was heard by an independent disciplinary panel who are responsible for determining the penalty. Hayley Turner has made a full admission and apology regarding the rules breaches she has committed, and the BHA’s position was that it is appropriate that this should be considered mitigation when it comes to determining a penalty. The guideline entry point for an offence of this nature is an 18-month disqualification.”Turner, who works as a broadcaster for ITV Racing, created a Paddy Power account in December 2015 a month after she had retired from racing, however she continued using the account even after she had reapplied for her license later that year. All together Turner placed a total of 164 bets, before Paddy Power notified the BHA of its believe that she was breaching the rules. The ban will be enforced with immediate effect, however she will still be able to work on racecourses. Responding to the ban, Turner stated: “At the end of the day I made a huge mistake and have to suffer the penalty as I did break the rules.“The problem was I saw myself as a television pundit rather than as a jockey, which explains as to why I started betting while working on ATR and on ITV.“Three months is a long time and I do think it is quite harsh, especially as I have a mortgage to pay, but I have just got to take it on the chin.” Paddy Power raises awareness of Missing People with Motherwell ‘silhouette’ stand August 7, 2020 Related Articles
